5 Best Paintball Guns for Self-Defense (2024) – Expert Guide

Do you know that a paintball gun, also called a marker, can be very effective for nonlethal self-defense purposes?

To carry a firearm with you all the time is not everyone’s cup of tea, having the courage and guts to shoot it is yet another thing. But safety is important for everyone! That’s why having a non-lethal gun that does its job like a real one is the perfect alternative for you if a firearm is not an option for you.

Holding a gun against your enemies is, sometimes, enough to scare them off. And if that gun can effectively cause pain, no other option is left for them but to retreat. As a result, you do not need to get up close to your enemy to defend yourself.

Yet the best part is that, unlike a real gun, you do not have to get a license for having a paintball gun. All you need is a few dollars to buy a good gun and keep it to guard yourself, your family, or your property.

Warning: Though most states/ countries do not require a license for having a paintball gun, there are a few exceptions. Like you are not allowed to carry a paintball gun in California. Or, in some countries, you may have to keep a card with you, stating the fact that the gun is non-lethal. So, it is always better to be familiar with the laws of the place you live to avoid any kind of trouble later.

In order to make these guns more effective, you can use them with different ammunition rather than actual paintballs. There are many options available like pepper balls, reusable rubber balls, or the heaviest ones; rubber-steel balls.

As the name says, these guns are mainly made to play paintball but their effectiveness enables them to use them for self-defense also. This is why you need to be more considerate to find the one that suits your needs.

Buying Guide to Choose a Good Paintball Gun for Home & Self-Defense

There are countless models of paintball guns available in the market. With three main categories in regard to mechanism (pump, semi-automatic, and automatic), each gun varies in efficiency, durability, and cost.

Here is everything you need to consider before you make a purchase.

Durability

This is surely the first thing that comes to your mind when buying any kind of machine. There are thousands of guns available.

Some of them come at really low prices but those are made for new or younger players and can hardly do any good for self defense purposes. Spending a few extra dollars and buying a quality product will surely prove better in the long run.

Best Paintball Guns for Self Defense and Home defense

Fire Rate and Accuracy

Different paintball guns can fire at various rates. Some guns have a fire rate of 1 paintball a second, while others can shoot around as many as 30 rounds per second. So it is all about what you would prefer.

As you are buying a gun not for sport but for self-defense purposes, you might like a mid-range fire rate. Too low a fire rate can cost you your safety if faced with an enemy. But you may not need as high a fire rate as some electro-pneumatic guns offer.

As for those who prefer a high fire rate, they are not focusing on accuracy most of the time. But for you to defend yourself, an accurate shooting is better than a speedy one.

Though it is all about personal preferences, if you think that you are not an accurate shooter, a higher fire rate can compensate for you.

Comfort Level

You must be comfortable with whichever gun you are using. There are countless designs available. But as you might not be interested in practicing and investing time in your gun to start feeling comfortable with it, you should choose the one which is easy to use and comfortable for you from the very beginning. Many guns are made taking this element into consideration.

For example, a handle parallel to the receiver of your gun can help you take an accurate shot. Some guns are not easy to handle and use, while others are designed in the best form to allow easy operation.

Remember something can be the best for a paintball player but not so for you. Keep your needs and comfort level in mind before you choose one.

Looks, Magfed vs Hopper Fed

For some people looks are important for anything they buy, for others, it is not the case. But, while buying a gun for self-defense you must consider the looks whether you are interested in them or not.

best paintball gun for home security

If you are holding a paintball marker that looks more like a real gun, you might be able to scare your enemy off just by the look of it. The more real and scarier your gun looks, the better for you.

There are two ways you can feed a paintball gun with ammo. You can either use a hopper that sits above your gun and feeds it or you may have a magazine, like all the real guns, and use it to hold your rounds.

A hopper can hold far more rounds than a magazine but in order to make it look more real, a magazine is a better option. A hopper can hold as many as 200 rounds, you can have anywhere from 8 to 20 rounds which is absolutely not bad to defend yourself.

Calibers

There are three main types of paintball guns.

  • .43 caliber paintball guns
  • .50 caliber paintball guns
  • .68 caliber paintball guns

Each gun uses different paintballs according to the size of its barrel. The higher the caliber the bigger the paintballs it is supposed to use. And, depending on the calibers, a paintball gun can shoot with a velocity of 300 fps (feet per second).

But, if you are using a lower caliber gun, also called a low-impact paintball gun, its velocity can reduce to 130 fps. These guns are mostly used by younger players who cannot endure the pain of a paintball shot from a standard 68 caliber paintball gun.

Considering the fact that you are going to buy the marker to defend yourself, it is always better to buy a standard 68 caliber one. The more the velocity, the better the chances of your victory.

The 5 Best Paintball Guns for Self-Defense (Reviews)

Now that you know how to choose a gun for self-defense and what to look forward to, you are ready to make a choice for yourself.

Here is our list of the best paintball guns for defense. These guns are tried and tested under special circumstances to give you an unbiased, first-hand review of them.

1. Byrna SD Kinetic Launcher Paintball Gun

Byrna SD Kinetic Launcher Paintball Gun for Self Defense
Editor’s Rating:
9.5/10

The first paintball gun – a pistol for self defense on our list is here for a reason, and that too pretty solid one. The craftsmanship alone is pretty impressive and of course, this is not all.

This is a non-lethal gun or the “un-gun” as they call it and that is the only difference you might find between this gun and a real one. Other than that, it looks just like a real revolver, and it functions in a pretty similar way!

Let us dive into the details.

ColorTan, Gray, Black, Orange, Pink
MaterialPlastic
Gas TypeCo2
Mag/ Hopper FedMagfed
Caliber.68
Field of Accuracy60 feet
Ejectile Speed 300 fps

Design

This gun is available in five different colors so you can choose from gray, black, pink, orange, and gray. We tested the tan one as it was one among the closest to real gun colors, but certainly, each performs in a similar way.

It is not only the gun that you receive, instead, it is a complete self defense kit. You will receive a quality gun, or as they call it a “kinetic launcher” (we will be discussing the reason later on) with three tubes of balls, an extra packet of balls, two Co2 cartridges with another extra bag of cartridges, two magazines, all packed in a compact carrying case.

This gun has got all the guts to look like a real one. It is quality made and sits beautifully in one’s hand because of its perfect honeycomb grip, which also makes it non-slip and easy to use.

It is mag fed and each magazine can hold 5 rounds in total. If you run out of balls from one magazine, you can replace it with another in a matter of seconds.

Pro Tip: If you still think that these two magazines are not enough for you, you can buy some extra and keep them all filled with balls to come in handy when needed.

Performance and Reliability

Here are all the details you need to know before you go buying a gun.

Accuracy

Talking about the first thing first, this gun has the best accuracy you can wish for. Although Byrna claims a 60 feet accurate fire range, the ball starts to drop after around 40 feet, which is pretty good for a paintball gun.

You are guaranteed to shoot your enemy from a safe distance, given that you know how to take aim.

Byrna SD Kinetic Launcher Best Paintball Pistol review for defense
Ammunition

You can shoot a variety of balls with its help and this is not a plain paintball gun, they call it a “kinetic launcher”. The package comes with some nylon balls included in it. You can use these balls to defend yourself, or you can also use them to practice your firing skills as they are reusable.

In addition to the nylon balls, the gun can hold and launch pepper balls, rubber balls, or even rubber steel balls that can hit your opponent really hard.

A .68 caliber ball hitting someone with a speed of 300 fps is certainly not going to be a pleasant experience, and if you are lucky enough to hit a sensitive body part, you can surely get yourself out of trouble.

Pro Tip: It is always better to avoid using paintballs in this gun. As you are using it as a self defense gun, you must have it ready all the time with ammo loaded in it. The problem with paintballs is that they are too fragile to be kept loaded in a magazine for a long time.

Extreme temperatures or mishandling of the gun will make them break inside the magazine, rendering your gun useless when the need arises. Though you can use them for practicing in your backyard.

Gas Type

The gun comes with 8 gram Co2 cartridges which are not as common as 20 gram containers but you can certainly get them after a bit of research. Each 8 gram container will give you around 25 shots.

Because you are using the gun as a tool of self defense, it is important that you always have it ready with a Co2 container attached to it. But in order to save gas from leaking out of your gun, you can make use of the “safety switch”.

This safety switch is attached to both sides of the gun, making it an easy operation for left handed people as well. If the switch is at the “safety” indicator, the gun will not shoot unnecessarily. We consider this a good addition to save you any trouble.

The Trigger Pull

And as we are on shooting, let us discuss the ease of it too. The trigger of this gun is not the easiest to pull. You may need a bit of practice for it too and it will take some real effort to take it all the way back where it will finally shoot that ball out.

Pros

  • Impressive Craftsmanship
  • Looks Like an Original Forearm
  • Amazingly Powerful
  • Pretty Accurate
  • Compact and Easy to Hold

Cons

  • Trigger is a bit hard to pull
  • A bit heavy on budget

Ratings and Reviews of Buyers

Most consumers of this gun are completely satisfied with its looks and performance. There is a hundred percent satisfaction rate with the craftsmanship of this gun. And to top that up, it works perfectly.

People are happy to have it when they are alone in the house or to defend themselves in a crowded area. Especially for women, it is a great option as most of them do not prefer to carry a real forearm.

There are a few complaints about the hard trigger pull. Some people are also complaining about its not being that powerful, but these complaints are few and far between.

Overall, this paintball gun has a 4.5 out of 5 star rating.

Our Verdict

We have given this paintball self defense gun the top place on our list and we mean it. This gun is so far the best in its looks as well as performance.

Our experience tells us that it can certainly immobilize the bad guy if you have successfully hit him with it, or buy you some time to reach a safer place.

Without any second thoughts, we can say that this self defense kit is worth its price and worth buying.

On our scale, this one has secured a 9.5 out of 10 stars.

But if you want to have something more powerful and replace your non-lethal with a “less-lethal” gun, we have an alternative for you. But do keep in mind that this one can take a life! “Less-lethal” is not a synonym of “non-lethal” and if you, for instance, hit someone hard on his/her throat with this gun, there is a risk of taking a life. So be careful about what you are buying.

2. Umarex T4E Walther PPQ Paintball Gun

Umarex T4E Walther PPQ Paintball Gun for Self-Defense

When it comes to self defense paintball guns, Umarex is a brand you can trust for sure.

Unlike the first one on our list, this is not a complete kit. It is a single piece gun in the package, but totally worth it. You can use it to practice for the sport, or you can use it as a non-lethal self defense gun.

Interested in the details? Let us dive in!

ColorFlat Dark Earth, Blue, Black
MaterialMetal and Plastic
Gas TypeCo2
Magfed or Hopper FedMagfed
Field of Accuracy30 feet
Ejectile Speed355 fps
Calibers.43

Design

This paintball marker is made mostly of metal and comes in three colors. You can choose from black, blue, and “flat dark earth” which is actually a shade of brown.

This one too is mag fed so you do not have to carry a huge hopper above it. And its magazine can hold 8 rounds at a time.

The compact build of this gun makes it look like a real one. In fact, it is designed exactly like a real semi-automatic pistol called Walther PPQ. You cannot really tell the difference between this one and the firearm except for the time you actually use it. Yes, the difference is that it won’t kill anyone but certainly no one would like to be shot with it.

Performance and Reliability

This is a .43 caliber gun, which means it uses smaller rounds but it ejects them with a velocity of 355 fps, which is pretty impressive. The velocity makes these rounds more effective and that is what we are looking for.

Uses and Ammunition

This gun is made for two main purposes: you can either use it in your backyard to practice paintball, or you can use it as a tool of self defense.

That is why the gun comes with two types of springs, one that is fitted beside the magazine of the gun, you can use this one to shoot paintballs or pepper balls. Or you can replace it with a much stronger one, you will get that in the box as well, and shoot those jaw-breaker rubber or steel rounds with it.

Allen Key

This gun comes with an Allen key which is securely fitted in the grip strap. The purpose of the Allen key here is to open the Co2 cartridges

The problem here is that you need to take the Allen key out of its place, open the Co2 cartridge, and then use the gun. You cannot try to accomplish this task when you are confronting an enemy, neither you can have it always open in your gun or it will damage your gun in the long run.

Pro Tip: Buy an extra magazine separately from Amazon which has a smack at the bottom. You can insert your Co2 in the magazine and pinch it open when needed without using the Allen key. It will make the gun a complete self-defense tool without you having to worry about running gas in your gun.

Accuracy

When it comes to accuracy, this gun is a little bit of a disappointment. The ball starts at a great velocity but it drops when it gets farther than 25 feet.

So it is not much of a help if you want to defend yourself from a distance, but if the enemy is quite up close, you can certainly poke a hole in his cheek with this thing.

Umarex T4E Walther PPQ Best Paintball Pistol for Home Security
Magazine

The magazine of this gun has a good capacity of holding 8 balls at a time but it comes with only one magazine. We had some trouble trying to insert it in the gun as it kind of jams midway.

At first, we thought it was the wrong magazine packed with the gun but then it entered it without further ado. So we realized this is just how it works, jamming in midway and then fitting in perfectly.

But it is always better to have at least two magazines with you if you are carrying it for self-defense. Another magazine will not cost you much but it can save your life one day.

Especially in the case of this gun, as mentioned before, it is better to get a magazine that enables you to open the Co2 cartridge without the hassle of using the Allen key.

You can also watch this video to get even more familiar with this gun.

Pros

  • Looks Like a Walther PPQ
  • Compact in Design
  • Amazing Velocity
  • Budget Friendly

Cons

  • Not Really Accurate
  • The Sharp Ends May Injure the User

Ratings and Reviews of Buyers

This paintball gun is among those products that have the highest satisfaction rate from its consumers.

People are happy with how it looks and how it works. The velocity it offers is great, so it is being used as a self-defense tool and a paintball trainer gun.

It does have some problems with its craftsmanship as there are a few complaints about the jamming of the magazine and the sharp edges, especially when you open the rubber band to take out the Allen key. But the low price of this gun covers all these complaints pretty easily.

It has secured a 4.7 out of 5 stars rating from the hundreds of customers who have used it.

Our Verdict

As per our experience, this gun is a great option for a budget-friendly self-defense tool. It can be of great help if you are in need of safety backup in crowded areas. Because there, distance is not a problem for you. You can shoot those steel balls with the help of this gun and it will surely do its job perfectly.

But if you are looking for a gun that can help your wife to shoot a burglar entering the house, while standing on her balcony, you might not need this one. The accuracy will, most probably, fail you.

Our scale gives it an 8 out of 10

3. Valken M-17 Paintball Gun

Valken M-17 Paintball Gun review for Self-Defense

The next paintball gun on our list is not as compactly designed as the others but it has its own uses. This is a heavy-duty paintball marker that works great not only in a paintball field but also for self defense.

Let us peek into the details.

ColorBlack
MaterialPlastic
Calibers.68
Magfed/ Hopper FedMagfed
Gas TypeCompressed Air
Field of AccuracyDepends on the FPS Rate
Ejectile Speed or FPSAdjustable

Design

This paintball gun on our list is quite huge in size like most paintball markers are. It is basically designed to be used for playing paintball but it works just as well for self-defense.

It is a magfed gun and its magazine can hold as many as 18 balls at a time. And to work with this gun, you will need to attach a 13 ci, 3000 psi tank (the tank is not included in the package, you would have to spend around 50 Dollars to get one) of HPA or compressed air.

The size of this gun is not really helpful if you want to carry it around, but if you want to keep it at your home, the gun can work perfectly well.

Performance and Reliability

The gun has some amazing specs that allowed it an entrance to our list of the best self-defense paintball markers. The first thing to count is its comfort level. The gun is extremely easy to use, every newbie can use it.

This gun gives you the freedom to use it as a semi-automatic or fully automatic gun as per your choice. And what difference does that make you might ask?

Well, if you are using it in semi-automatic mode, it will fire one ball at each trigger pull. But if you have set it to fully automatic mode, all you need to do is to keep that trigger pulled and it will continue to fire as long as you want it, or as long as there are rounds in its magazine. And the best part is, you don’t have to have any batteries for that.

Gas Tank

Once you have attached the gas tank to the gun, the gas starts running and the gun is ready to use. But this is not what you want if you are using it occasionally as a self-defense tool. The running gas will not only perish with time, but it will also ruin your marker.

You will need to buy an “On-Off valve” that you can attach to your HPA tank. So, you can keep the tank attached to the gun but open it only when you are going to fire.

Uses and Ammunition

As mentioned before, this gun is designed to be used for paintballing, but its build and performance make it a great tool for self-defense also. Interestingly, if you have any inclination to play paintball, you can have the best of both worlds with this gun in your hands.

You can keep and use regular paintballs in this gun. Or you can use any other kind of round that matches its size. Be it nylon balls for practice, or pepper balls for self-defense, everything works great in it.

Note: Though this thing works great by shooting heavy balls at your enemies with accuracy, if you fail to take aim with the help of balls, you can always bump this heavy thing in their head and you will have the job done anyway!

Accuracy and Speed

This gun is pretty accurate when it comes to firing. The field of accuracy depends on the fps rate you have set.

Pro Tip: The barrel this gun comes with is rather small. It works fine but if you need even better accuracy, upgrade it with a longer one and you will get the best result out of it.

And as far as the speed is concerned, this marvelous gun allows you to set its velocity. There is a round button or screw, whatever you like to call it, that says FPS. You can spin it clockwise or anti-clockwise to increase or decrease the fps of your gun.

Pro Tip: Do not try to spin the whole thing, because that is what we did but it does not work that way. Take an Allen key and spin the inner screw and set it to where you need it.

Magazine

As you can expect, considering the size of the gun, it comes with a huge magazine that can hold 18 rounds at a time. You can use any kind of ball in the gun but the magazine it comes with is rather fragile. The spring broke when we tried it with the rubber steel rounds.

Fortunately, it is just a minor problem and replacing the magazine solved it.

Pros

  • Two Modes. Semi-Automatic/ Fully Automatic
  • Good Capacity of Magazine
  • Adjustable Firing Velocity
  • Well-built

Cons

  • Fragile Magazine
  • Too Big to Carry Around

Ratings and Reviews of Buyers

This paintball gun is one of the very popular guns among its users. People are happy with the countless options it comes with, like the adjustable speed and semi/ fully automatic modes. The large magazine is also a favorite with many customers.

But it does need some upgrades to work properly. Like most of the users have attached a barrel to have the best out of it. An On/Off valve is also a necessity for self-defense users.

Overall, it gets a 4.4 out of 5 star ratings from its consumers.

Our Verdict

This gun has some great options to offer. It is a well-built, heavy-duty gun with a good fire rate and accuracy. A little investment is needed to upgrade a few things but the investment is worth it. You can keep it in your home and deter your enemies with it any day.

But if you are looking for a gun that you can carry around with you all the time, this is not a preferable option. The gun is huge in size and heavy to carry. You can look up other compact guns on our list.

On our scale, this one has secured a 7.5 out of 10.

4. Umarex T4E HDS Paintball Shotgun

Umarex T4E HDS Shotgun Paintball For Home Defense

Here is another gun from Umarex and we have to add it because it has its own set of virtues like a double barrel. It is a great tool for self defense, perfectly shaped, well-built, and yet at an affordable price. Are you interested?

Let us dive into the details.

ColorBlack
MaterialMetal and Plastic
Magfed/ HopperfedBarrel fed, No Magazine Included
Calibers.68
Ejectile Speed200 fps
Gas Type Co2
Field of Accuracy70 Feet

Design

As the name says, it is a shotgun and that is why it looks like one. It has got two long barrels that are sitting parallel to each other. And what they do there is really wonderful, but that we will discuss in the sections below.

It does not have a magazine and the balls are inserted directly into the barrels. Having no magazine is a plus and a con at the same time depending on how you want your gun to be. No magazine means you do not have to carry one with you.

But at the same time, you cannot have a lot of rounds in your gun. You can only feed the barrel with two rounds at a time. The barrel opens up with a push button underneath, so you can insert the balls in and push it back to its place.

The design and looks are pretty impressive. It is far from those toyish looks of cheap guns. It is beautifully built and looks like a real firearm.

Performance and Reliability

This shotgun has some really amazing features to offer the way it comes. But, that is not all. You can make some slight changes to make it even better for you. Let us discuss everything in detail.

Accuracy and Velocity

This gun is amazingly accurate and you can take aim as far as 70 feet with it. As mentioned before, this shotgun has two barrels, you can insert one round in each of the barrels at a time and switch between the barrels to shoot from.

But, the most interesting part is that you can fire from both the barrels simultaneously as well. The drawback of this is that the velocity decreases because it is using the same amount of power to shoot rounds, be it one at a time or two. Yet, it is an interesting feature to have.

And, as we said before, you can make changes. And what will be the result?

The velocity of this gun will double. Like if you are shooting two rounds at a time, each will have a speed of around 300 fps. And we certainly do not recommend using one barrel after making the modification.

Pro tip: Once your Co2 is about to finish, the velocity decreases. Then you can switch it to use one barrel at a time which will work with the right velocity again.

And how exactly are you going to make those changes?

Let us tell you our secret to this wonderful modification and the velocity of your gun is going to double.

Here are a few simple steps to take. Just remember that the modification we are going to make is not permanent at all. It is totally reversible and you can repeat the same process to bring the gun back to its initial state.

  • Place your gun on a clean, flat surface, preferably light in color. We are going to unscrew a lot of tiny little screws, and the things are not gonna help if you lose any of those screws. A lighter surface will help you look better.
Umarex T4E HDS Shotgun Paintball modification

  • Make your gun lie flat and start opening the screws with the help of a small screwdriver. There will be a total of 9 screws on the body of your gun that you need to open.
  • Once you have removed all the screws, gently remove the plastic lid from the gun.
  • You will find a metal lit underneath and this one is again screwed to the main body of the gun. Search for another seven little screws here and remove them too.

  • Now that you have uncovered the main body, you need to be even more careful about handling the things. Try not to move anything that does not concern you or you might not be able to put it back in its previous place.
  • Gently remove the barrel arm switch and keep it aside.

  • Once you have taken the valve assembly out, you will find a metal lid that lets the gas into the spring. Remove that lid and you will see a little plastic piece underneath. Yup! You got it, that is what we were hunting for.
Removing Metal lid from Umarex T4E HDS Paintball Shotgun to modify velocity
Removing Metal lid from Umarex T4E HDS Paintball Shotgun
Removed the Restriction for better paintball velocity of Umarex T4E HDS Paintball Shotgun
  • Use a pair of tweezers and remove the plastic piece and you have removed the restriction from your shotgun.
  • Place everything back in its place. Tighten up all the screws and now you are holding a shotgun that looks the same but has doubled in power.
  • Take help from this video if needed.

Pro Tip: After making this modification to your gun, it should be specifically used for self-defense only. Paintballs cannot endure this much pressure and will likely break right in your barrel causing damage to the gun.

Gas Type and Ammunition

This shotgun works with the readily available Co2. you will have to buy 12 gram Co2 cartridges separately that can be easily inserted in the grip. And there is no tool required to open the Co2 cartridges, a simple pinch at the bottom will do the trick.

And the gun works perfectly with paintballs, pepper balls, and nylon balls in its original form. But once you have made the modification with its valve, it will work great with heavy steel core rounds too.

Pros

  • Impressive Looks
  • Double Barrel
  • Two Rounds Can be Shot Simultaneously
  • Amazing Velocity
  • Pretty Accurate

Cons

  • Only Two Rounds Can be Inserted at a Time
  • You will have to make modifications to increase the velocity

Ratings and Reviews of Buyers

This gun, too, is one of the most loved paintball guns by its consumers. Most people are using it as a paintball practice tool but others are also using it as a self-defense tool and it works great for both.

Especially those who have modified it to increase the velocity are happy with its results as a self-defense gun.

There are a few dislikes too, and the reason is its capacity of holding merely two rounds at a time. Yet the reasons to love are far more than those to dislike.

This is why it has got a 4.6 out of 5 stars rating from the thousands of customers who have used it.

Our Verdict

This is certainly one of the best guns you can have for home or self-defense. The best you can want from a self-defense tool is its accuracy and velocity and this shotgun has both.

Only two rounds at a time could be a problem for new users but a little practice to take aim makes it better with time. And, inserting those rounds in the barrel takes a few seconds only.

Its double barrel function and the liberty to fire two rounds at a time is what we liked the best about it. And it works wonders when you have modified it according to your need to increase the velocity.

It looks good and it is undoubtedly easy to operate. And to top it all, everything comes at the most affordable price you can imagine.

On our scale, this one gets a 9 out of 10.

Field of Accuracy40 feet

Design

This is a gun that you can easily hold in your hands and fire with all ease. It is well built and comes in an orange and black color.

Like the Umarex shotgun in our list, this one too does not operate with a magazine. The rounds are inserted in the slot underneath the barrel instead. And it can hold only six balls at a time.

Performance and Reliability

If a gun is on our list, it goes without saying that it performs well. But exactly how it performs and to what extent it is reliable, we will discuss everything here.

Accuracy and Velocity

This gun is amazingly accurate and it can take aim as far as 40 feet. This means you can defend yourself from your enemies at a good distance but you certainly need practice for that.

And the velocity with which this gun shoots is again going to surprise you. Yes, this little gun can shoot with a speed of 360 fps and you can imagine the pain it can cause to the person standing at the other end of it.

The only problem that we found about this gun is that it fires rubber rounds a bit slowly. After you have shot a round, the other rubber rounds in the barrel seem like taking time to move and the gun is not ready to fire as rapidly as we like for a self defense gun. Other than that, everything is to the point.

Pro Tip: If you have this gun, try using pepper balls in it. Pepper balls work perfectly in it as they have a smoother finish and roll in the barrel much more quickly than any other kind of round.

Uses and Ammunition

Like a few other guns on our list, this one is specifically made for self defense. But, as the other guns do not prohibit the use of paintballs in them, this one does.

You can use pepper balls, rubber balls, or rubber steel balls in it, but you need to refrain from paintballs because the force with which it fires those balls is going to burst the fragile paintballs right inside the barrel. That will cause more damage than good.

Comfort Level

This self defense gun is absolutely easy to use. The grip is comfortable and the operation is easy. It is also lightweight and yet amazingly powerful.

It uses 12 gram Co2 cartridges that can be inserted into the grip. Once you insert the Co2 cartridge into the grip, all you have to do is give it a little push with the palm of your hand and the needle comes out from a slot above the grip, indicating that the cartridge is all set and the gun is ready to use.

Pros

  • Very Compact Design
  • Amazing Velocity
  • Quite Accurate
  • Easy to Use
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • A Bit Slow Firing Rate

Ratings and Reviews of Buyers

Like most of the self defense guns by Umarex, this is too is quite popular among its users. People are loving this gun because of its accuracy and powerful firing and yet it is amazingly compact to carry around. It’s easy operation is another quality that makes it recommendable.

There are very few complaints about it too. For some customers, the gun does not look as real as they wish it to be. For others, its slow firing rate is a problem. But its low price does not allow much room for complaints.

This is why it has got 4.6 out of 5 star ratings from its consumers.

Our Verdict

As per our experience, this gun is one of the easiest to use guns you will find on the market. And yet the accuracy and velocity it provides are matchless. We certainly recommend it if you are not a pro about guns and firing. It will give you a proper home and self defense tool without a lot of trouble about learning something new. Yet practice is the key.

But if you are looking for something with a more rapid firing that can fire those heavy steel core rubber balls without any mistake, you have plenty of other options on our list.

On our scale, this one gets an 8 out of 10.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is a paintball gun good for self defense?

There is nothing better than a firearm for self defense, but if you cannot or do not want to carry a lethal gun for home or self defense, a high caliber paintball gun can serve the purpose of a non-lethal self defense tool.

Do I need a license to use a paintball gun as a self defense tool?

As most countries do not consider paintball guns a real weapon, it does not require a license to use them. But it is not true for all countries or states. Get familiar with your local laws to know your requirements better.

How can a paintball gun deter my enemies?

A paintball gun, if it hits sensitive parts of the body like the eyes, neck, head, fingers, and the inner side of your legs can cause enough pain to disturb the victim.

Yet better, there are many other kinds of rounds that you can use as your paintball gun ammunition that hit much harder, making sure that your enemies retreat, or at least they buy you some time to reach safety. You can use pepper balls, nylon balls, or steel core balls to make your paintball gun more effective as a self defense tool.

Can a paintball gun cause death?

The chances of a paintball gun causing death are near to zero but not literally zero. If you are using those steel core, jawbreaker rounds and hit someone on the throat from a near distance, you may cause death too. Hitting in the eyes or some other sensitive areas can cause temporary or permanent injuries as well.

Are paintball guns easy to use?

Paintball guns come in a variety of types. Some of them are absolutely easy to use, and others are a little complicated and need a little bit of patience to get familiar with.

But, easy or not-so-easy, if you want to use one as a self defense tool, you need to practice with your gun or there is no chance of you using it the right way against your enemy.

How can I take better aim with my self defense paintball gun?

Whether you are using your gun for paintball or self defense, to make your aim better you need to practice. You can use nylon balls to practice in your backyard, as these balls are reusable, which will make them more budget friendly.
